Inverness was an unexpected highlight to end our first leg of our summer in Europe! We flew to Inverness from Portugal. Unfortunately, we missed our flight in Lisbon (because we forgot about going through passport control and waited in the lounge too long to get to the plane) and had to fly through London, with an overnight near the Gatwick airport. We arrived in Inverness a little later than expected, but were pleasantly surprised when we got there. The weather was crisp and sunny, which all the local people were quick to remind us doesn't happen very often. We took a taxi from the airport to our hotel, dropped off our bags, and went to get lunch at a small sandwich shop. After eating, we had a little bit of time before our bike tour so we walked around a very old cemetery near the hotel. It was fun to see all the Mackenzie headstones, since we were in the middle of watching Outlander. The bike tour was fantastic! It was a private tour, since no one else had signed up for the time we booked. Our guide was a local woman who had lived in Inverness her whole life. She took us past the cathedral, through the islands in the middle of the River Ness, to the small botanical garden, past the shore, by the locks in the river, and all around the area of the town. It was a great way to spend the afternoon and we learned a lot about places, tradition, and people in Inverness.
